Hymns from the Heart features a collection of arrangements of Afro-American spirituals and old-time Gospel hymns. We even learned a Dakota Sioux hymn which has made it into the mainstream, and accompanied it with Indian drum by our local Crow choir dad and drummer. The gospel hymns were accompanied by a small string band and the spirituals on piano. With the band, we were able to take our “Road Show” around town throughout the spring. Here’s a list of the area merchants, restaurants, and organisations who hosted us, with our thanks to all:

Moe’s Southwest Restaurant
Dahlonega Wal-Mart

SPIRITUALS:
CLIMBIN’ UP THE MOUNTAIN
Climbin’ up the mountain, children, didn’t come here for to stay.
If I nevermore see you again, goin’ to meet you at the judgement day!Moses went down into Egypt land, he told ol’ Pharoah
That the good Lord sittin’ on His heav’n’ly throne, said “Let my people go.”

Daniel in the den of lions, he did begin to pray,
And the angel of the Lord locked the lion’s jaw. That sure was a mighty day!

Children in the fiery furnace, they did begin to pray,
And the angel of the Lord put the fire out! That sure was a mighty day!

SWING LOW, SWEET CHARIOT
Gonna ride on a chariot grand to that great home in the sky.
Gonna play in that heavenly band when I get there by ‘n’ by.
Gonna ride to glory, all dressed up in a golden gown.
Gonna meet my maker; yes, my chariot’s heaven bound.

Swing low, sweet chariot, comin’ for to carry me home.
I looked over Jordan, and what did I see? A band of angels comin’ after me.

DRY BONES
Ezekiel cried, “Them dry bones!” Now hear the Word of the Lord!
The foot bone connected to the leg bone, the leg bone connected to the thigh bone,
The thigh bone connected to the hip bone, the hip bone connected to the back bone,
The back bone connected to the neck bone, the neck bone connected to the head bone,
Now hear the Word of the Lord!
Them bones gonna walk around, now hear the Word of the Lord!

WITNESS
Who’ll be a witness for my Lord?
Now Daniel was a Hebrew child, he went to pray to his God awhile.
The king at once for Daniel did send, he put him right down in the lions’ den.
God sent angels, the lions to keep, so Daniel laid down and went to sleep.
Daniel was a witness for my Lord.
There was a man of the Pharisees, his name was Nicodemus and he didn’t believe.
Christ told Nicodemus as a friend, “Man, you must be born again.
Marvel not, man, if you want to be wise, repent, believe, and be baptized.”
Who’ll be a witness? I’ll be a witness for my Lord.

NATIVE AMERICAN HYMN:
MANY AND GREAT, O GOD
Many and great, O God, are Thy things, Maker of earth and sky.
Thy hands have set the heavens with stars; Thy fingers spread the mountains & plains.
Lo, at Thy Word the waters were formed,; deep seas obey Thy Voice.
Grant unto us communion with Thee, Thou star-abiding One;
Come unto us and dwell with us; with Thee are found the gifts of life.
Bless us with life that has no end, eternal life with Thee.

GOSPEL HYMNS:
SHALL WE GATHER AT THE RIVER?
Shall we gather at the river, where bright angels’ feet have trod;
With its crystal tide forever flowing by the throne of God?

When we reach the shining river, lay we ev’ry burden down;
Grace our spirits will deliver and provide a robe and crown.

Soon we’ll reach the shining river, soon our pilgrimage will cease,
Soon our happy hearts will quiver with the melody of peace.

Yes, we’ll gather by the river, the beautiful, the beautiful river,
Gather with the saints by the river that flows by the throne of God.

I’D RATHER HAVE JESUS
I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold, I’d rather have Him than have riches untold.
I’d rather have Jesus than houses or land; I’d rather be led by His nail-scarred Hand,
Than to be a king of a vast domain, and be held in sin’s dread sway.
I’d rather have Jesus than anything this world affords today.

I’d rather have Jesus than men’s applause; I’d rather be faithful to His dear cause.
I’d rather have Jesus than world-wide fame; I’d rather be true to His holy Name,
Than to be a king of a vast domain, and be held in sin’s dread sway.
I’d rather have Jesus than anything this world affords today.

He’s fairer than lilies of rarest bloom, He’s sweeter than honey from out the comb;
He’s all that my hungering spirit needs, I’d rather have Jesus and let Him lead,
Than to be a king of a vast domain, and be held in sin’s dread sway.
I’d rather have Jesus than anything this world affords today.

These lyrics were written by Rhea Miller and the tune by George Beverly Shea, who just went to his heavenly reward this spring of 2013. George’s mother Bev left the poem, written in 1922, on the piano with a prayer that her son would find it and change the course of his life. George was so moved by the words that he sat down at the piano and began singing a tune to it. His mom asked him to sing it in church the next day. This event did change the course of George’s life, and he sang this hymn all over the world as he toured with Billy Graham, the evangelist.

STANDIN’ IN THE NEED OF PRAYER
It’s me, it’s me, O Lord, standin’ in the need of prayer.
Not my father, not my mother, but it’s me, O Lord, standin’ in the need of prayer.
Not my sister, not my brother, but it’s me, O Lord, standin’ in the need of prayer.
Not my pastor, not my deacon, but it’s me, O Lord, standin’ in the need of prayer.

‘TIS SO SWEET TO TRUST IN JESUS
‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, and to take Him at His Word;
Just to rest upon His promise, and to know “thus saith the Lord.”
Yes, ‘tis sweet to trust in Jesus, just from sin and self to cease,
Just from Jesus simply taking life and rest, and joy and peace.

I’m so glad I learned to trust thee, Precious Jesus, Saviour, Friend,
And I know that Thou art with me, wilt be with me to the end.
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him! How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O, for grace to trust Him more!

STARS IN MY CROWN
I am thinking today of that beautiful land we shall reach when the sun goeth down,
When through wonderful grace by my Savior I stand, will there be any stars in my crown?

In the strength of the Lord let me labor and pray, let me watch as a winner of souls,
That bright stars may be mine in that glorious day when His praise like the sea billows roll.

O, what joy it will be when His face I behold, living gems at his feet to lay down;
It would sweeten my bliss in that city of gold, should there be any stars in my crown.

Will there be any stars, any stars in my crown, when at evening the sun goeth down?
When I wake with the blest in that mansion of rest, will there be any stars in my crown?
